IV Sedation Pre and Post Op Instructions
For your safety, please follow all instructions carefully. Failure to follow these instructions may require your procedure to be postponed or canceled.
NO FOOD OR DRINK FOR 8 HOURS BEFORE YOUR APPOINTMENT
This includes water, coffee, gum, candy, and mints. Failure to fast can cause vomiting and aspiration of stomach contents into the lungs, which can be life-threatening.
Medications
Take your regular medications as prescribed unless our office or your physician gives you different instructions.
Tell us in advance if you take:

Diabetes medication

Blood thinners
-
Weight-loss or GLP-1 medication
-
Benzodiazepines such as Xanax, Ativan, or Valium

Opioids or narcotic pain medications such as hydrocodone, oxycodone, fentanyl, or morphine

Prescription sleep medications, muscle relaxants, or other sedatives
Do not stop or change a prescribed medication without instructions from our office or your prescribing physician.
Transportation and Adult Supervision

A responsible adult must drive you to and from your appointment.

Your responsible adult must remain at the dental office for the entire procedure and receive your postoperative instructions.

You may not drive yourself home, leave alone, or use a rideshare service unless your responsible adult accompanies you.

A responsible adult must stay with you after sedation for the remainder of the day, or as directed by our team.
Clothing and Preparation

Wear loose, comfortable clothing, a short-sleeved shirt or sleeves that can easily be moved above the elbow, and flat shoes.

Remove contact lenses if possible. Avoid heavy makeup, lipstick, jewelry, and nail polish.
Marijuana Alcohol and Other Drugs

Do not use marijuana or cannabis in any form, including smoking, vaping, edibles, oils, or concentrates, before your appointment.

Do not consume alcohol or use recreational or illegal drugs before your appointment.

Do not take any opioid, narcotic, benzodiazepine, sleep medication, muscle relaxant, or other sedative that was not prescribed to you.

Tell our office if you have recently used marijuana, alcohol, opioids, benzodiazepines, sedatives, or any other recreational drug or controlled substance. This information is confidential and necessary for your safety.

Do not arrive under the influence of marijuana, alcohol, narcotics, sedatives, or any other drug. Your procedure may be canceled or postponed for your safety.
Illness or Health Changes
Call our office before your appointment if you develop fever, cold or flu symptoms, cough, chest congestion, shortness of breath, vomiting, diarrhea, or any significant medical change.
Tell us about all new medications or medication changes.
After IV Sedation
For the remainder of the day, do not drive, operate machinery, drink alcohol, use marijuana or recreational drugs, take any medication that was not approved by your dental team, exercise strenuously, or make important financial or legal decisions.
Follow all postoperative instructions provided by your dental team.
